How do you stick plasterboard to a wall?

Nowadays, plasterboard is an extremely popular building material and is predominantly used for levelling walls. The most popular and quick type of plasterboard installation is dot and dab this method will provide desired smooth and sturdy finish perfect and ready for further decoration.

This type of gluing method is also known as drylining, and its main principle is to bond plasterboard to secure flat brick or blockwork walls. The plasterboard is glued in such a way where the bonding is applied evenly spaced across the surface dots and dabs. Dot and dab is preferred to the traditional wet plastering method because it is extremely practical, quick and not messy and enables to start decorative process almost instantly.

From the price point of view, wet plastering is significantly cheaper than drywall. However, the cost-effectiveness is not in the product price rather in how much it will cost to keep the labourer to complete the project since the wet plastering tends to be more time-consuming.

To apply this type of plastering effectively you will need to make sure you have several necessary building materials:

Plasterboard that is at least 12.5mm thick
Choose between square edge and tapered edge if you planning to skim with plaster at the end
Tapered edge plasterboard should be used if you are planning to use jointing tapes
Plasterboard tool that will enable easy measuring, cutting, applying, installing, and fixing tools.
Personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, dust mask and hard hat.

In order to calculate how much adhesive, you will need it is important to note that dabs have to be 50mm and 75mm wide and around 250mm long and 10mm thick. For each board, three vertical rows are required where each dab should be 6 to 8 inches below the last one. For example, one 25kg bag of plasterboard adhesive will be enough for two boards.

When mixing the adhesive make sure to use a mixing stick and the bucket and mix to a relatively thick consistency – make sure to follow the packaging instructions for full guidance. It is recommended to mix enough just for one board at a time.

Dot and dab adhesive takes between three and six hours to set, which means you could carry out jointing or skimming the same day. In contrast, plaster takes two to three days to dry.
